Our newest Christine’s Hero is Katie Finch, who was nominated by Ms. Cheryl Copeland, Student Assistance Counselor at Katie’s school, Hunterdon Central Regional High School. The following is the nomination letter submitted by Ms. Copeland.
It is my pleasure to nominate a most spectacular young woman for the Christine’s Hero award. As I was reading about Christine on your Webpage, it was clear to me that Katie exemplifies the true spirit of Christine. As one of Katie’s counselors at school, I have observed first hand the wonderful qualities that Katie demonstrates. She truly is a kind person who has already helped others in so many ways.
First, Katie was selected as a Peer Mediator at Hunterdon Central Regional High School. Only twenty students were chosen out of 800 students for their leadership skills and excellent character. Katie has mediated numerous conflicts with peers. She has encouraged them to be respectful, open and honest. Katie has provided a true service to our school.
Katie’s passion is helping other people in any way that she possibly can. She was part of a group of students who met with our special education population for social group meetings. The students shared concerns and challenges. Katie connected with the students in a way that I have rarely seen. The special needs students adore her. Katie helped plan an end of the year party with the class. The students reported that it was the best party they ever attended. Katie went a step further and met with our Principal asking if she could organize student volunteers to do activities with the class. She mirrors Christine’s Hope and has provided experiences that have a positive impact on the lives of our special needs students at Hunterdon Central Regional High School.
Katie has had her own set of challenges in her life. She has overcome them and has given back to others. Her energy, enthusiasm and outgoing personality are infectious. To quote and excerpt regarding Christine’s life “She has a natural love for people, and a natural kindness and positive energy that was hard to contain.” This describes Katie as well. Katie Finch is a treasure.
Not only has Katie organized and participated in making her school a better place, but she is also an excellent soccer player and helps work at Rita’s Water Ice in Pennington, the family business.
We thank Cheryl Copeland for nominating such a wonderful person and we are so proud to name Katie Finch our newest Christine’s Hero.
